The March 11 earthquake in Japan continued to impact Japanese automakers, with Toyota and Honda reporting notable decreases in July sales. Detroit automakers fared better, with Chrysler experiencing its best July in four years. Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen also reached new heights for July says, while Hyundai continued to break its own sales records. Here’s a breakdown of July sales by manufacturer.

Ford: Ford Motor Co. reported a 9 percent increase in total sales for July, with 180,865 units sold. Ford brand sales increased 13 percent, while sales at Lincoln recorded a 40 percent year-over-year increase. The Ford Escape record 66 percent month-over-month gain, with 24,411 units sold. Sales of the Ford Explorer surged by 108 percent, while the Edge recorded a 4 percent year-over-year sales increase.

Toyota: Toyota Motor Sales (TMS)’s daily selling rate (DSR) decreased 19.7 percent to 130,802 units on a year-over-year basis. On a month-over-month basis, sales increased 17.9 percent on both a DSR and raw volume basis. Year over year, Toyota Division’s DRS decreased 19.8 percent to 116,263, while Lexus Division sales decreased 18.8 percent to 14,539.

GM: General Motors reported an 8 percent year-over-year increase in total sales, with 214,915 units sold in July. On a month-to-month basis, the company’s sales edged up by 1 percent from June. Chevrolet Cruze sales reached 24,648 units, marking the fourth consecutive month sales of the compact sedan have topped 20,000. Total sales for GM’s full-size pickups – Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra, increased 2 percent from June, while retail sales – those to individuals – rose 5 percent compared to last month.

Honda: American Honda Motor Co.’s total July sales reached 80,502 vehicles, a 25.6 percent decrease based on the daily selling rate (DSR). Still facing production problems as a result of the March 11 earthquake in Japan, Honda Division sales dropped 25.7 percent to 71,100 units compared to the year-ago period. Acura Division sales also decreased, dropping 25 percent to 9,402 units vs. July 2010.

Nissan: Nissan North America sales increased 2.7 percent from last July to 84,601 units. Nissan Division sales increased 6.4 percent on a year-over-year basis to 77,191 units, while Infiniti vehicle sales decreased 24.1 percent from the year-ago period to 7,410 units. The Nissan Rogue set a July record with 11,260 units, marking a 2.7 percent increase over 2010. Additionally, sales of every Infiniti model increased 18 percent over June.

Chrysler: Chrysler Group experienced its best July sales month since 2007, with total U.S. sales increasing 20 percent over last year to 112,026 units. Jeep brand sales rose 46 percent over July 2010, with the 2011 Jeep Wrangler setting an all-time sales record. Additionally, sales of the 2011 Jeep Compass jumped 240 percent from July 2010. Other top selling models included the 2012 Fiat 500, the 2011 Dodge Durango and the 2011 Chrysler 200.

Mercedes-Benz: Mercedes-Benz USA recorded its best July in  terms of volume since 2006. Compared to July 2010, the German automaker increased sales by 16.7 percent to 21,065 units sold. The company’s E- and C-Class model lines performed the best, officials said. The only negative was certified pre-owned sales, which fell by 14.7 percent from last July to 5,895 vehicles sold.

Audi: Audi reported a record-setting 17 percent year-over-year sales increase with 9,146 units sold, topping its July 2001 record of 7,974 units. Last month’s sales figures also marked the seventh consecutive month of record-setting sales for Audi in the U.S. market. Company officials attributed its gains to a 64 percent year-over-year increase in sales of its 2012 A6, as well as a 31 percent increase in sales of the company’s Q7 luxury crossover. In total, Audi recorded year-over-year sales increases for seven of its models.

Hyundai: Hyundai Motor America reported a 10 percent year-over-year sales increase in July, with 59,561 units sold. This marked an all-time sales record for the month and the seventh consecutive month that Hyundai has broken its own all-time monthly sales record. The Hyundai Genesis realized a 53 percent sales increase from July, while the Equus was up 37 percent vs. June. The Sonata and Santa Fe models also experienced increase of 17 and 15 percent, respectively.

BMW: BMW Group reported an 11.7 percent year-over-year sales increase for the month of July, with 26,120 units sold. BMW brand sales increased 12.3 percent to 21,409, compared with 19,064 vehicles sold last July. The best performing BMW models included the X3 SAV (up 294.8 percent), the 5 Series (up 58.5 percent) and the Z4 Roadster (up 92.4 percent). MINI USA also reported an 8.9 percent year-over-year sales increase, with 4,711 units sold.

Mazda: Mazda North American Operations reported a 0.2 percent year-over-year increase in July, with 20,783 units. A variety of models experienced year-over-year sales increases, including the Mazda CX-7 (up 18.9 percent), the CX-7 (up 20.6 percent) and the Mazda5 (up 22.2 percent). Despite reporting its best sales month since April 2011, the Mazda3 reported a year-over-year sales decrease of 4.3 percent, with 9,288 units sold.

Volkswagen: Volkswagen recorded its best July since 2002, selling 29,066 units total for a 21.7 percent increase over prior year sales. In addition to having it’s best Golf sales since July 2008, the automaker saw a 50.9 percent increase in Jetta sales to 15,713 units over last year. The Touareg and Tiguan recorded 119.3 percent and 19.5 percent sales increases, respectively, while sales of the Eos sales increased 39.9 percent over prior year.
