WASHINGTON The American Financial Services Association announced that Stephen Smith, senior vice president of American Honda Finance Corporation, was honored with the AFSA’s Distinguished Service Award (DSA).

Smith was one of three executives to receive the 2011 DSA during the national trade association’s 95th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. The award is given to individuals who have contributed significantly to the industry and the association’s growth on a national level, advanced its mission and objectives, and raised its image, according to AFSA.

Smith joined American Honda Finance Corporation in 1985 as manager of retail finance, and climbed his way through the ranks until he assumed his current position in 2001. Smith served as the 2008-2010 chairman of the AFSA’s Vehicle Finance Division and chaired two if the association’s Vehicle Finance Conferences — in New Orleans in 2008 and Orlando in 2009.

Smith currently serves on the board of directors and executive committee, as well as the board of Americans Well-Informed on Automobile Retailing Economics (AWARE).
