I was wondering if there are any other money making things you all do on the side. I have just started looking into Real Estate. A good friend of mine is a Broker and is getting into Commercial real estate. I cant believe it but he has made $550,000 so far this year..i almost killed myself when i heard that. It is tempting but i don't know how i could go a month or two or three without a check while getting started...

No real way of doing Real Estate "on the side" in this biz. The reason Real Estate is th eoine thing I have never sold...you think the hours of this job are intrusive and demanding? Even I call my real estate agent at 9pm on Sundays and expect them to be available.
As for doing something else on the side? If you are in the right position with the right dealership...you should have little to no need for the additional income. I dont see, where the added income could adequately compensate me for the surrendering of what little free time I do get.
As for making 1/2 mill in real estate? Sure it can be done. If you live on the coast, in a high income area and have a network of contacts that would fill a small towns phone book. I mean, you dont REALLY think, that a neophyte realtor is gonna land the listing for that 5.4 million dollar 27 room mansion do you?

While I can appreciate JimD's dose of reality, if it's a dream of yours I say go for it! Life is too short. A wise man once said "Don't listen to the ones telling you can't. Listen to the ones telling you you CAN!"
I would never condone quitting your job without having a strong plan in place. I feel this is something you would have to work at first part-time and see if you can be successful at it. Then, as you grow your contacts and expand your marketplace and if it's a viable future for you, go for it!

He does commercial realestate and development. I didn't say i was going to do anything. It is funny because we used to be room mates and we were both going to take our lisence together but i got back into the car business. Now he has his own company and is doing well. He really wants my help and wants to bring me on board but the jump is always scary to get way outside your comfort zone. I almost lost my ass when i left F&I to be a outside rep for a ESC provider...

True enough One. It wasnt my intent to infer "squashing" of a dream. I guess my point was, I AM doing what I want to. So perhaps I answered from personal perspective vs mentor.
Point then becomes, if you are NOT doing what you want to do, then by all means...hitch up your trousers, buckle down and go at it. But give it 120% of your attention/effort. Half-stepping, is gonne assure that you fail. (in my experience at any rate.) Doing what we do, I find that investing some "free time" in professional growth, can and will provide for handsome returns. Most likely, exceeding anything I could get from "dabbling" in another line of work.

I agree also with Jim's reality dose. This is my career of choice and I enjoy the mucho dinero's I make while doing it. I also enjoy leaving it and going home undisturbed by cell calls at 8:30 wanting me to show a property on a Sunday when I'm planning on a beach outing. If you want to seek an extra career-great! Go for it. I'l be at the beach soaking up rays.

It's a good thing you didn't say anything about side biz in a box, just the thought of it makes my knees hurt
memories.....
I do plenty of stuff on the side, disc golf, fishing, hunting, working out, pool, pingpong, etc. etc.......
As far as money goes, my Ameritreade penny stocks are fun, so is going to the casino's and playing blackjack or Texas hold em,. Last year I earned somewhere around 25k that I actually had to report on my returns, I would say my disc golf earnings were somewhere around 10k cash....
I put so much effort into my day job, a side job would have to become a day job for me, I like to play alot.
If one of my side activities gets to the point that I can turn it into a career, you bet ya, I'll stop coming to work and pursue that.
woo hoo....."Cheers"

Yea but don't you get tired of all the politics i your stores...i think i am having a typical Jeremy moment, you know the one where you feel you can total make this ship steere in the right direction if only given the oppurtunity...i get easily frustrated because i am a perfectionist and try to master my trade as well as anyone. That is the one thing i can say and only say about when i was a salesman i made my money and if it was a bad month it was me to blame...i am rambling now so i will stop!!!!

I dabble with insurance and mortgages. Not too much, just here and there. -----------------

I used to detail cars; I haven't done any for a couple years, though. I'm really damn good at it, and I enjoy it; I find it very relaxing and fulfilling, actually. Every year I give a clinic along with the Meguiar's East Coast Sales manager, Rod Kraft.
If I were younger and still able to work that hard physically, I would own my own detailing shop in an affluent area. I would have no fear taking a rotary buffer to a Maybach or Ferrari.
I got a set of "before and after" pictures into The Autopia Guide to Detailing. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Note that that is an Audi S4, not an A4, and I'll tell you, I did a lot more than use a cutting pad and Meguiar's #83! That car was beat on by some hack.
