Any of you read Marv's March 2012 blog about the mobile F&I menu: http://www.fi-magazine.com/Blog/Mad-Marv/Story/2012/03/Progress-or-Pipe-Dream.aspx

We will be close Industry Summit 2012 with a panel discussion (debate?) on that very topic. It happens on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 3 p.m. Check out what else we'll be talking about in September at Industry Summit 2012 by going to www.industrysummit.com.

IMPO it is the agents/providers/OEM's that are attempting to change the F&I process to suit their needs.

WUS makes an interesting point and I hadn't given this much thought. Agents/Providers/OEM's are likely feeling the pressure of substandard F&I departments and are looking at every possibility. If they become persuaded that process/product X works better than process/product B, then they would likely pressure Mr. Dealer to implement it.

Sorry WUS, I needed you to spell it out for me. Is what Marv wrote what you were thinking?

Here is my opinion:

F&I people fail to comprehend the use of technology will in the very near future ultimately will replace the human interaction.

So, is it your opinion technology like the iPad used in the hands of sales managers and salespeople could eventually replace FIM's?

I refuse to believe that we, as a society, have grown so weary of human interaction that we would rather interact with a computer. Sure it will change things, but I do not see technology replacing the sales or F&I staffing needs at the dealership level. Even though we are in an age when you can order ANYTHING via the internet, the stores are still packed with people. Everywhere I go, I see people buying from people. I can remember people 20 years ago saying that the internet would replace sales people by y2k. How is that dire prediction looking now?

Which stores have replaced sales staff and/or F&I staff with a computer?

This concept is not new it has been around over 15 years. There are Several in CA, FL, TX I have observed a store that operates with no sales people, the customer chooses the vehicle via computer, the vehicle is brought up, test drive, credit is approved by time they get back.

IT is a effective and simple model.

Who goes on the test drive, does the application, fills out the paperwork, sells aftermarket/back end products? And, again, which stores?

Well, I'm certain Greg & Company along with all the other trade mags would just jump at the chance to interview-hell-do a front cover on any store that is successful at this. Even though you're identity remains a mystery WUS, I feel certain your revealing or naming any of these operations wouldn't implicate you. Just name a couple and let the interviews begin. I'm VERY interested in reading about it and so are a lot of people.

The few, and I mean few, stores that have allowed themselves to be revealed that are using the iPad to sell F&I thus far haven't proven very much but an entire operation using technology like this would certainly be newsworthy.
