General Motors Corp. is starting its biggest test of online automotive selling. The world's largest automaker announced March 21 that Chevrolet customers in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area will be able to go online to browse dealer inventories and get e-prices for Chevy's full line of cars and trucks.

If the test works, "there's a good chance we'll go national," said Mark Hogan, president of

e-GM, the automaker's e-commerce unit.

GM says it has the support of its 22 dealers in the D.C. area, but according to company officials, the program is essentially voluntary.
