Chicago could be the next location for a General Motors experiment that lets consumers shop on the Internet for the best price instead of going dealer to dealer, according to the Chicago Tribune.

GM launched such a program with its Chevrolet dealers in the Washington, D.C., area in May, and Mark Hogan, president of e-GM, the automaker's e-commerce unit, said the Chicago area would be a good location to expand the program.

With the Washington program, GM is trying to generate sales leads among shoppers who don't own a Chevrolet or other GM vehicle and may not have seriously considered one.

Washington-area Internet users who visit the Web site of Autobytel (www.autobytel.com), an independent service that lists all makes and models and refers shoppers to dealers, can click on the "Chevrolet Showroom," which lists

the new-vehicle inventory of all 22 Chevy dealers there.
