The Chrysler Group is eliminating the middle layer of its dealer-support system, according to the Detroit Free Press. The automaker will close 24 zone offices, but open several regional offices that cover wider territories, the Free Press said.

The regional offices handle parts distribution, primarily, but will take on additional

responsibility for dealer wholesale orders and localized sales promotions, according to the Free Press. Almost 1,000 people work in the 24 zone offices, and all were offered positions at the closest regional business center, said Chrysler Group Vice President Steven Landry. The number of employees

will stay about the same, Landry said. But the automaker expects to save a few million dollars a year on leases, utilities and related expenses, according to the Free Press.
