Dealers serving the most credit challenged customers, such as buy-here, pay-here, will likely face the most difficulties due to hurricane damage, Used Car News reported.

Finance customers are not likely to continue paying for a vehicle that has been ruined by water damage. And even if they are willing to pay, evacuees can’t get to the dealership to make payments.

In addition, vehicles yet to be sold at a buy-here, pay-here dealership are not often insured if they are less than about $5,000, Ken Shilson, founder of the National Alliance of Buy-Here, Pay-Here Dealers, told Used Car News.

AmeriCredit, a subprime lender based in Fort Worth, Texas, is working with its affected customers on an individual basis.
