DETROIT—General Motors Corp., the world’s largest automaker, recently reported that its car and light truck sales grew 3.9 percent in August. Newly launched vehicles such as the Pontiac Torrent and G6, as well as fuel-efficient cars and trucks helped boost sales.

Total August sales, excluding heavy trucks, grew to 363,521 units from 349,806.

There were 27 selling days in August 2006, up from 26 one year ago.

During the month of August, GM North America produced 465,000 vehicles, including 179,000 cars and 286,000 trucks, down 5 percent year-over-year.
