In response to increased consumer demand for automotive security products, Motorola's Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group (AIEG), a business unit of the Motorola Integrated Electronic Systems Sector

(IESS), has announced it has shipped its two millionth LoJack unit (LJU) to the LoJack Corporation, the world leader in stolen vehicle recovery products. Motorola produces the

LoJack units, which are marketed under the LoJack name.

LoJack's strategy is to expand the use of its technology in the U.S and international markets where the combination of population density, new-car sales and high rate of vehicle theft have led to an increased demand for the product and allowed LoJack to gain significant market penetration.

Together, Motorola and LoJack have reached a milestone by producing and marketing a million LJUs over a three -year period, while the same activity for the first million units spanned a 10-year period. The two millionth unit was shipped in the latter part of 2000.

"Motorola and LoJack are committed to providing consumers with security products specifically designed for the car," said Dave Melka, senior vice president and general manager, Motorola AIEG. "LoJack has done an excellent job targeting those markets in need of such products and we are there to support this rapid global expansion."

LoJack has increased its rate of expansion in the U.S. during the last three years, adding seven new metro areas to the existing 12

active domestic markets. Within existing markets, LoJack has improved distribution through new car dealers, its primary sales

channel.

"We are pleased that by working with Motorola we've been able to sell and install a record number of units over the past three years," said Joseph F. Abely, president of LoJack. "We are committed to designing and marketing the best automotive security products for our customers. Motorola's reputation for excellence

in engineering and manufacturing aided LoJack when it first began to offer its product to the public, and it is still a tremendous advantage for us."

To date, installed LoJack units have resulted in more than 42,000 stolen vehicle recoveries -- a 90 percent recovery rate (based on stolen vehicles equipped with LoJack in the United States).

In addition, LoJack and Motorola have worked together to increase the company's U.S. business by developing new versions of the LJU.

A "ruggedized" version, and a unit with self-contained battery power have enabled expansion into construction and tractor/trailer segments.
