A Kansas City man has been indicted by a Jackson County grand jury in connection with an ongoing odometer fraud investigation by Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, reported the Kansas City Star.

Shane Russell is charged with three criminal counts alleging he sold or attempted to sell vehicles in which he misrepresented how many miles were on the odometers.

Russell could not be reached for comment. According to the indictment, Russell worked at First Class Auto and Marine at 14501 E. U.S. Highway 40 in Kansas City. A phone listing for the shop was unavailable.

Russell allegedly sold a 2000 Chevy Blazer to a consumer for $8,000, falsely claiming it had just 55,000 miles on it and neglecting to inform the consumer he had replaced the odometer.

According to Nixon, state law requires a dealer or individual to tell the potential buyer “the total number of miles registered on the odometer and any alteration done to the odometer.”

A spokesman for Nixon said the investigation is ongoing.

The charges are felonies that carry a sentence, if convicted, of up to four years in prison and a fine of $5,000 per count.

Officials said Russell has not yet entered a plea.
