The redesigned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu conquested owners

of non-Chevrolet products at greater rates during May and

June vs. a year ago, according to the Power Information Network.

However, in many cases the conquest rates remained modest.

The movement to Malibu increased among owners of every non-luxury

brand except niche brands MINI and Scion, for which there

was no movement in either time period. The five non-luxury

brands with the greatest movement this spring

were the five non-luxury GM brands: Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, GMC and Saturn.

The movement from the Toyota, Nissan and Honda nameplates increased fivefold, fourfold and threefold, respectively, though the current rates are still below 1 percent. These low conquest rates from the major Asian brands suggest the domestics' efforts to win back import owners will be a long-term process.
