NEW YORK — A used-car dealership in the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York was raided last week by the New York State Department of Taxation and the office of the King’s County District Attorney. The agencies seized seven vehicles and handed down indictments for grand larceny, falsifying business records and multiple violations of state tax laws against owner Akpan Charles Akpabio and his business, Midamach Corp.

Akpadio was charged with failing to pay taxes on the more than $3.5 million worth of vehicles he sold between 2003 and 2006. State and county officials said that business records seized in the raid indicate that Akpadio charged approximately $300,000 in sales tax which he failed to pay to the Internal Revenue Service. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 15 years in prison.
