WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Dealers wrapped up the holiday weekend well, keeping the metal moving as they gear up for fall and the close of the third quarter. According to Autodata Corp., August sales rose 5.5% from a year ago to 1.6 million units for a SAAR of 17.53 million units. That’s up from from 15.94 million one year ago and up from 16.48 million in July. The following is a breakdown of sales performance by manufacturer:

BMW: August sales for BMW brand vehicles increased 11% from a year ago to 27,214 units. On a year-to-date basis, the BMW brand is up 11.6% on sales of 211,005 units through the first eight months of 2014.

In August, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) increased 15.6% from a year ago to 19,318 units. Year to date, BMW used-vehicle sales (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) are up 13.4% on sales of 134,141 units through the first eight months of 2013.

For August, MINI sold 5,006 units, a decrease of 16.9% from a year ago. Year to date, MINI USA reported total sales of 34,969 through the first eight months of this year, a decrease of 21.1% from a year ago.

Chrysler: Chrysler Group reported U.S. sales of 198,379 units, a 20% increase from a year ago and the OEM’s best August since 2002.

The Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Dart, Chrysler Town & Country, and Ram Cargo each posted year-over-year sales gains in August compared with the same month a year ago. The Jeep brand’s 49% increase was the largest sales gain of any Chrysler Group brand during August and its best-ever sales result in the month of August. Chrysler Group also extended its streak of year-over-year sales gains to 53-consecutive months.

The Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot and Dodge Journey each recorded their best August sales ever, while Ram Trucks joined Jeep in logging the largest percentage sales gain of any Chrysler Group brands during the month. Sales of the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 mid-size sedan were up 39% from July.

Ford: Ford Motor Co. realized its best August sales month in eight years with 222,174 units sold, a slight 0.4% increase from a year ago. Retail sales totaled 178,800 vehicles, a 2% increase, while fleet sales declined 6% from a year ago to 43,374 units.

The Ford Fusion realized its best-ever August sales month with 29,452 units sold, an increase of 19%. Retail sales for the month were up 23% from a year ago, with model posting retail sales gains in every region. Leading the way was the Western region, which realized a 27% increase in sales from a year ago.

The Ford Escape set a record for total sales and retail sales, with the compact SUV realizing a 9% increase in total sales from a year ago and a year-over-year retail sales gain of 23%. The Ford Explorer realized its best August since 2004, with sales rising 25% from a year ago to 17,748 units sold. And according to company officials, the Explorer is on pace to be America’s best-selling midsize utility for a fourth straight year. Additionally, F-Series monthly sales totaled 68,109 vehicles, marking the sixth consecutive month sales have climbed above the 60,000-vehicle threshold.

Lincoln sales are up 13% on a year-to-date basis through August. Officials said they expect the pace to pick ip the rest of the year. The Lincoln MKC sales remained steady with 1,760 vehicles sold in August.

General Motors: General Motors dealers delivered 272,423 vehicles in the United States in August, led by an 18% increase in truck sales from a year ago, a 10% increase in GMC deliveries and a 30% increase in commercial sales. Total deliveries were down 1% compared with last August, which was GM’s best sales month of 2013. Retail deliveries declined 4%. Fleet deliveries were up 9% compared with a year ago.

Sales of Chevrolet and GMC large SUVs were up 38%, while Cadillac Escalade deliveries increased 64% for the vehicle line’s best August since 2007. Chevrolet Silverado deliveries were up 13% and GMC Sierra sales were up 10%. This was the best August for GM pickups since 2008. Sales of the Buick Encore small crossover were up 13% from a year ago, while Regal deliveries were up 29%. GM’s gains in the commercial segment were driven by pickup and van sales, which were up 23% and 19%, respectively.

Honda: American Honda Motor Co. reported August sales of 167,038 units, an increase of 0.4% vs. August of last year. The Honda division posted its third highest monthly sales result in its 44-year history, with sales totaling 151,551 units in August. The Acura division posted sales of 15,487 units in the same period. Year to date, American Honda has sold 1.04 million units through August.

Honda Accord sales totaled 51,075 units, an all-time monthly record and an increase of 32.5%. It was the eighth-straight monthly gain for the Accord, while sales of the Odyssey increased 12.9% from a year ago to 12,488 units sold.

Sales of the new TLX, which went on sale in mid-August, totaled 2,286 units, while the Acura ILX posted its best-ever August with sales increasing 5.7% to 1,798 units sold.

Hyundai: Hyundai Motor America posted an August sales record of 70,003 units sold, up 6% vs. the same record-setting period in 2013. The company’s August performance also marked the second time ever the brand topped the 70,000-unit mark.

Hyundai’s Santa Fe and Tucson CUVs recorded sales increases of 15% and 35%, respectively, while the Sonata (up 25%) and Genesis sedans (up 15%) continued their impressive rollouts.

Mazda: The automaker realized its best August since 2002 with sales increasing 11.4% from a year ago to 31,305 units sold. Year-to-date sales through August are up 9.6% vs. last year, with 216,973 vehicles sold.

The Mazda6 recorded its best August in nine years with 5,631 vehicles sold, an increase of 32.5% from a year ago. The Mazda CX-5 realized its best August ever with 10,709 vehicles sold, a 25.9% increase from a year ago.

Mercedes-Benz: Mercedes-Benz posted record August sales volumes of 27,078 units sold across its passenger car and light truck lineups, a 9.4% gain from a year ago. Adding 1,880 units for Sprinter Vans and 1,334 units for its smart brand — up 35.3% and 34.3%, respectively — total August sales for Mercedes-Benz hit a record 30,292, an 11.6% increase from a year ago. Year to date, Mercedes-Benz sales increased 8.2% from a year ago to 205,894 units sold. Volumes of 15,577 at Sprinter and 7,332 at Smart propelled MBUSA to a grand total of 228,803 units sold through the first eight months of 2014.

August sales for the Mercedes-Benz brand were led by the C-, E- and M-Class model lines. The E-Class took the lead with 6,481 units sold in August, followed by 5,151 units for the C-Class, which enters an all-new generation for model year 2015. The brand's best-selling SUV, the M-Class, reports total sales of 3,438. The CLS-Class four-door coupe posted a monthly sales gain of 47.8% from a year ago with 1,150 vehicles sold. Sales of the brand’s flagship S-Class rose 312.2% from a year ago 1,855 units sold.

Mitsubishi: Mitsubishi Motors continued its upward sales momentum through the month of August with sales totaling 6,786 units, a 28.5% increase from a year ago. The Outlander Sport was the brand’s sales leader with sales of 2,869 units in August — the models’ best August sales month and its second-best all-time sales month since its release in 2010. The Mirage subcompact scored its second best all-time sales month in August with 1,666 units sold. Sales of the recently redesigned Outlander totaled 1,134 units in August.

Nissan: Nissan Group posted an August sales record with 134,388 units sold, an 11.5% increase from a year ago. The Nissan Division also set an August record with 125,224 sold for the month, an increase of 15.3% from a year ago.

Rogue sales were the best of any month in the history of Nissan with 21,419 units sold, an increase of 24% over the previous August. Nissan LEAF also set an all-time monthly record with 3,186 sales, an increase of 31.7%. Altima sales also set an August record with 32,153 units sold, up 3.8% over the prior year.

Infiniti reported sales of 9,164 vehicles in August, a decrease of 22.9% from a year ago. Sales of the Infiniti Q50, which went on sale one year ago, were up 9.1% from a year ago, while sales of Infiniti's sports sedans, the Q50 and the G37, rose 29% from a year ago.

Toyota: Toyota, Scion and Lexus reported August sales of 246,100 units, an increase of 10.2% over August 2013. On a raw-volume basis, unadjusted for 27 selling days in August 2014 vs. 28 selling days in August 2013, sales increased 6.3% over the year-ago month. Toyota division posted August 2014 sales of 213,291 units, up 9.6% year over year on a DSR basis. On a volume basis, Toyota division sales increased 5.7% over August 2013.

By model, the Camry posted sales of more than 44,000 units, while sales of the all-new Corolla were up 23%. Prius posted sales of nearly 24,000 units, while Toyota SUVs were up about 28%.

As for Lexus, the ES posted sales of more than 7,600 units in August, while sales of the GS were up nearly 14% from a year ago. Sales of Lexus luxury utility vehicles were up almost 12% from a year ago, while the GX posted triple-digit gains for the 10th month in a row.

Volkswagen: The German automaker reported 35,181 units delivered in August, down 3.8% from August 2013. The Golf GTI delivered 2,026 units, a 46.7% from a year ago. Additionally, the all-new Golf delivered 1,773 units for the month, a 17.3% increase from a year ago, while the Passat delivered 9,190 units for the month. The Jetta sedan delivered 13,406 units and the Tiguan delivered 2,151 units.

Audi: Audi realized its best sales month in its history in August and its 44th consecutive month of record monthly U.S. sales, with sales increasing 22.1% from a year ago to 17,101 units sold. On a year-to-date basis, Audi sales have increased 14.5% from the year-ago period to 116,066 units sold.

Sales of the all-new 2015 Audi A3, which officially went on sale this past spring, totaled 12,329 units, while sales of the A6, A7, A8, and Q7 increased 11% on a year-to-date basis.

Porsche: Porsche announced August 2014 sales of 4,540 vehicles. During the first eight months of 2014, Porsche delivered 31,759 vehicles in the U.S. market, an increase of 11.6% over last year (28,456). August was noteworthy due to strong 911 sales, which were 32% higher than last August. Deliveries of 1,485 Cayenne in August were on par with last year’s sales of 1,435, while the Macan recorded sales of 969 units.
