This week, New York Governor Cuomo signed a pro-Tesla bill into law. The New Jersey Assembly also voted to allow manufacturers to directly sell zero-emissions vehicles to consumers.
The owner of a dealership in New York has been indicted for allegedly stealing more than $50,000 in sales tax on vehicles he sold. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
A dealership that accepted trade-ins with remaining loan balances and then failed to pay off those balances before reselling the cars to unwitting consumers was ordered to permanently close. The owner is prohibited from ever operating a car dealership in the state.
Under the agreement, Tesla will be able to continue operating its five licensed retail locations in the state. Additional locations will be established under a strengthened dealer franchise law.
As part of the settlement, the six dealerships must reform their advertising practices and pay fines of up to $15,000. A seventh dealer was served with a statutory notice of the attorney general’s intention to file a lawsuit.
The dealership will pay more than $86,000 to customers who were charged a bogus administrative fee when purchasing a used vehicle, in addition to $50,000 in penalties to the state.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that Auto/Mate was named by the Albany Business Review as one of the “Best Places to Work.”
The New Economic Impact Study shows dealers are responsible for 58,000 jobs, and for collecting $1.83 billion in taxes for state and local governments.
