YONKERS, N.Y. -- Consumers are often not told about incentives and rebates available to them when they are shopping for a vehicle, according to a survey by Consumer Reports Auto Price Service.

Despite the high number of deals advertised, only 60 percent of prospective car buyers were offered an available cash rebate and only 40 percent were offered special low-financing rates.

The Consumer Reports survey also found that 58 percent of new-car shoppers accepted, at extra cost, alarms, VIN etching and GAP insurance. Consumers with a yearly income of less than $60,000 were more likely to accept the extra products.

These findings are based on a nationwide survey of 13,716 adults. The study investigated the behavior of new- and used-car buyers.
