The list demonstrates that it will take a major shift in consumer preferences to unseat passenger cars from best-seller lists. Through the first 11 months of 2016, the share of passenger cars has dropped 10%, while the popularity of SUVs and light trucks continues to soar.
The good news, according to Edmunds.com, is the industry is on pace to top last year's record new-vehicle sales total. The bad news, the firm noted in a separate release, is car buyers are rolling over negative equity from their trade-ins in record numbers.

According to the firm's internal traffic data, about 500,000 consumers use its site every month to appraise their vehicles, Edmunds' new MyAppraise taps into this pool of active users to generate potential leads for partnered dealerships.

Between July and September, certified pre-owned vehicles accounted for 22% of used-car purchases at franchise dealerships -- the largest share of any third quarter.
