The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will propose new fuel economy standards for the 2027 model year and beyond in April.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has accused Fiat Chrysler Automobiles of failing to disclose engine management software that increased air pollution in 104,000 diesel-powered Ram 1500 trucks and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs in the 2014 to 2016 model years. FCA officials say the software shouldn’t be considered a defeat device.
CARB rejected Volkswagen's recall plan because it contained gaps and lacked sufficient detail. The agency said Volkswagen’s descriptions of proposed repairs lacked enough information for a technical evaluation and did not adequately address overall impacts on vehicle performance, emissions and safety.
Hyundai and Kia Motors have settled litigation with car owners affected by overstated fuel economy ratings on vehicles sold between 2011 and 2013. Affected consumers will be given an option to accept a single “lump sum” payment or take part in a lifetime reimbursement program the OEM created in late 2012.
The legislation would repeal an outdated mandate that requires dealers certify that vehicles comply with the Clean Air Act.
Hyundai and Kia voluntarily reduced their fuel economy rating after an audit by the EPA found that the carmakers overestimated their fuel ratings for new models. The company has agreed to reimburse vehicle owners to cover the additional fuel costs.
