Hundreds of Volvos Could Careen Out of Control
NHTSA warns drivers to complete OTA recall remedy or risk crashing.
The NHTSA estimates that about 1,000 of more than 11,000 units recalled in June have still not been repaired via an over-the-air download.

An urgent brake-failure warning has been issued for recalled vehicles that still haven’t been repaired.
The warning involves about 1,000 units of particular 2020 to 2026 Volvo plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles whose brakes can fail when headed downhill.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued the warning for the following models:
2023 Volvo C40 BEV
2025 EC40 BEV
2025 and 2026 EX40 PHEV
2023 to 2025 S60 PHEV
2025 S90 PHEV
2024 and 2025 V60 PHEV
2023 and 2024 XC40 BEV
2022 to 2026 XC60 PHEV
2020 to 2026 XC90 PHEV
The federal agency estimates that about 1,000 of more than 11,000 Volvos recalled in June have still not been repaired via an over-the-air download. It urges owners to not drive the vehicles and to turn off regenerative braking until they complete an over-the-air remedy.
Brakes can fail if a vehicle is in one of those modes traveling downhill without brake pedals applied.
The flaw stems from an over-the-air repair in an earlier recall to fix rear camera failure.
The NHTSA posted a dashcam video captured of one of the affected units running off the road at a pretty good clip when navigating a windy narrow route before returning to the road and coming to a stop.
