AutoNation Tops List of Megadealers

While the automakers bemoan dwindling profit margins, the nation's largest dealers increased their total revenue by $8 billion last year,

according to the 2001 Megadealer 100 list published Tuesday by Ward's Dealer Business.

Total 2001 revenue for the top 100 megadealers was $109.8 billion, up from $101.6 billion in 2000, according to the publication. The top four megadealers accounted for about half the $8

billion increase.


AutoNation Inc., of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. was the biggest of the megadealers for the fourth straight year, with revenues of $21 billion. The dealer group operates more than 368 franchises in 17 states, primarily in the Sunbelt.


Charlotte, N.C.-based Sonic Automotive Inc. was No. 2 with 2001 revenues of $6.3 billion.


UnitedAuto Group Inc. came in at No. 3. The Detroit-based company's 2001 revenue was $6.2 billion.
