CNW Jitters Index Shows Record Increase
August’s Jitters Index experienced a record 1.72 increase over last year, indicating that car sales could be headed for a slowdown, CNW Research reports.
BANDON, Ore. — CNW Research projects September to be a 15.8 SAAR month, which would be a 12 percent increase from the year-ago month, according to the firm’s Retail Automotive Study.
However, CNW also predicts some hiccups in the industry. The firm saw a significant month-over-month jump in its “Jitters Index,” with the measurement recording a 1.72 percent increase in August vs. last year. This is the second highest level for the index since it was established in the mid-1990s.
“There is only so much homecentric economic gurgling before spending on non-essentials stops,” wrote Art Spinella.
Spending patterns have yet to return to pre-recession levels, the firm noted, and there seems to be a recent upward movement in the amount households are spending on necessities. But because the recovery has been slow, the firm expects spending on vehicles to slow.
