Ford’s North American boss Jim Padilla reportedly thinks current incentives on new vehicles are “unsustainable” and that a more rational approach is required.
Padilla was quoted by the The Car Connection (TCC) Web site as saying his goal was to bring incentives down to half the peak levels of recent months. But Padilla told TCC he could not predict how soon that would happen.
Since last autumn, rebates and other incentives offered on new cars and light trucks in the United Statesm have been as high as 20 percent of retail prices and are still only a few points below that, TCC said.
The increasingly important profit center continued making gains in the first quarter, according to StoneEagle data, ancillary products proving more popular as consumers hold onto their buys longer.
