May U.S. Sales Expected To Be Stronger Than A Year Ago
U.S. auto sales are expected to remain resilient in May as vehicle affordability and an overall improving economy continue to drive
shoppers into dealer showrooms, analysts say, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The seasonally-adjusted annualized selling rate for light vehicles in May is expected to be
about 16.8 million vehicles, up from 16.5 million in the same month a year ago, according to analysts. The major auto makers are expected to report sales results June 3.
Many analysts initially predicted that sales
would fall to 15 million vehicles this year from more than 17 million in 2001 in light of job losses and last year's zero percent financing, which could have taken sales away from this year -- the so-called "pull forward" effect. So far, the impact from the interest-free promotions has been far less than expected, and now many analysts expect sales to top 16 million vehicles this year, according to the Journal.
