RICHMOND, Va. -- A recent poll of more than 33,000 car shoppers shows that 33 percent of car buyers don't pay careful attention to their car purchase paperwork. The poll was conducted by CarMax Inc. through its Web site.

The poll asked, "When you buy a car, how much attention do you pay to the paperwork?" The majority of respondents, 67 percent, said they very careful attention to their documents. Twenty-five percent of respondents said they look at most documents, but some they just sign. Six percent of respondents said they just sign the documents and trust the dealership. And 2 percent admitted to not paying attention at all to the documents.

"There are too many (car buyers) who are not protecting themselves from potential excessive fees," said Tom Folliard, CarMax's executive vice president of store operations. "Car shoppers need to understand exactly what they are paying for, and the only way to do that is to take the time to review every charge on every document."
