After being accused of a wide range of violations, the Ramsey Auto Group Inc. and its 10 dealerships have agreed to pay up to $750,000 to settle charges, according to NorthJersey.com. If in one year’s time the company follows the terms of the settlement, the penalty will be reduced to $250,000.

The company was accused of failing to honor advertised prices, forging customer signatures on documents, charging for after-sale items without consumers’ knowledge, overcharging for repairs, failing to trade-in allowances accurately and misrepresenting the condition of used vehicles.

The state announced that the dealership is to pay $250,000 immediately, with $150,000 for civil penalties and $100,000 to reimburse the state for legal costs. Ramsey Auto Group will also pay at least $156,000 in restitution to reimburse customers.

The suit, which was filed by the state attorney general’s office and the Division of Consumer Affairs in Superior Court in Hackensack, N.J., was brought under the state’s Consumer Fraud Act, motor vehicle advertising regulations and Used Car Lemon Law.
