A technology company will unveil a product at the CES consumer electronics show this week that seems to promise driving without either blinding sun in the eyes or a clunky visor partially blocking the view of the road.

Michigan-based Gentex, known for its automotive electronics but also a supplier to the aerospace, medical and fire-protection industries, said it will unveil a product that integrates a dimmable sun visor into the vehicle display.

The public company, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, said the visor blends “switchable” vanity mirrors and transparent displays for driver alerts and other notifications.

Meanwhile, to meet demand in the European Union due to new traffic safety regulation there, Gentex said it will also debut driver-monitoring system technology to detect drowsiness, distraction and other safety risks.

Gentex got its start in the fire-protection products sector with a smoke detector before branching out to other industries. To address sometimes dangerous glare on the road, it introduced an automatic glare-reducing rearview mirror in 1982.
