Volvo says it’s introduced an industry first in technology that alerts drivers of road accidents ahead on their routes.
The automaker says the Accident Ahead Alert feature works from Volvo’s cloud using real-time data from national “road authorities” and compatible cars, starting with Volvo vehicles. It will debut in Europe with a launch in Denmark.
The feature is based on Volvo technology introduced in 2016 that lets Volvo cars communicate with each other about road hazards. Now Volvo is adding data from local traffic-management authorities and vehicles by other brands.
“To make roads safer for all, we call for more road authorities to share anonymous traffic accident data and encourage other car makers to join us in offering similar technologies,” Volvo said in introducing the feature.
The technology also allows voluntary crowd-sourcing on traffic accidents by Volvo owners.
