NEW YORK — Sources told The Wall Street Journal that General Motors plans to cancel “The Book,” an $1,800/month Cadillac subscription plan available in New York City since early 2017. The program, which allows members to switch among six Cadillac models up to 18 times per year and includes insurance and maintenance, would later expand to Los Angeles and Dallas.

The news was triggered by a source who claimed to have reviewed a letter prepared for New York subscribers that will announce Dec. 1 as the program’s end date and include a special offer to lease or buy a new Cadillac. The source pinned the blame on unexpectedly high costs for the factory, which is said to be searching for ways to cut costs as U.S. new-vehicle sales plateau.

In statements made to WSJ and other outlets, Cadillac representatives denied The Book has been permanently canceled.

“Cadillac will temporarily pause the Book by Cadillac program,” a GM spokesperson told Motor Authority. “Book by Cadillac launched as a pilot program, providing the brand with valuable insights and contributing to Cadillac’s ongoing commitment in identifying new and innovative luxury experiences for their customers. The brand will use these insights to make adjustments to Book by Cadillac strategy moving forward.”
