California Hybrids Reach State Record

The Golden State still leads the country in electric-vehicle registrations, but much like the rest of the U.S. its hybrid market share is up while full electrics stabilize after a dramatic first-quarter dip.

California new-vehicle registrations in the first half of the year told much the same story as the rest of the nation: electric-vehicle sales declined while hybrid sales increased.

Using data from Experian Automotive, the California New Car Dealers Association reported that hybrids accounted for 22% of the state’s new-vehicle market through June, which it said is the highest number on record for the powertrain in the state. Hybrid registrations reached 191,000 units, all sold through franchised new-car dealerships.

“Californians are buying the vehicles that fit their budgets and the way they drive, and right now that means a lot of hybrids,” said Jessie Dosanjh, CNCDA chairman and owner of Stevens Creek Chevrolet.

Fully electric registrations fell almost 25% year-over-year to a 16% market share. But the quarterly trends suggest that the EV market is stabilizing, according to the association, since market share increased in the second quarter after a dramatic first-quarter dip following the end of federal EV tax credits.

However, California remains the nation’s EV leader, accounting for 29% of all U.S. EV registrations. And with a new state point-of-sale rebate program, MyFirstEV, scheduled to be implemented soon, there's potential for a boost in EV sales.

Brandwise, Tesla controlled the EV market share at almost 57%, up from 46% last year.

But the top-selling brand overall in the Golden State was Toyota with a 19% market share, and the Toyota Camry was the top-selling passenger car. However, the Tesla Model Y remained the state’s top-selling model overall.
