DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. has added a $500 cash rebate on its Focus sedan, bringing the total to $2,500, while the Chrysler group offered interest-free financing for five years on most of its vehicles.

Despite Ford’s effort to price more closely to actual buyer transaction prices, Ford spent an average of $2,839 per vehicle on incentives in January, higher than the industry average of $2,391, Reuters reported.

Ford's incentive spending was down, however, from $3,075 the previous month. The Chrysler group led the industry last month in incentives, spending $3,317 per vehicle. Its spending on discounts was slightly lower from $3,354 in December, according to industry tracking firm Autodata.
