Honda cars, dealerships and more will sport a new look in the next year or two with a redesign of the brand’s iconic H emblem.

The latest of several refreshes of the Japanese automaker’s insignia since it first adopted the H mark in 1963 is a nod to Honda’s electric-vehicle development and general auto innovations. Honda said it will first apply the redesigned brand stamp to EV and hybrid models introduced in 2027. The last such symbol redo came in 2000.

The new H has a wider gap between the top vertical bars, making them look more like arms stretched toward the sky in exultation. It’s not unlike the emblem Honda adopted in the 1960s, but with softer, contemporary lines.

The company says the new design “represents the commitment of Honda to augment the possibilities of mobility and sincerely serve the needs of the customers of Honda automobile business.”

Honda said it decided to reconceive the H mark as it planned new EVs, including its 0 series of vehicles, “which are being developed with the determination to create new EVs from ‘zero’ by going back to the starting point of Honda as an automaker.”

The refreshed H will also appear at Honda’s dealerships, in marketing campaigns and on the automaker’s race cars.

“The automobile market is currently undergoing a major transformation with electrification and application of intelligent technologies,” Honda said in announcing the change.

“The new H mark will represent the ‘second founding,’ which Honda is [pursuing] with strong determination to lead the way during this period of transformation by offering new value that goes beyond customer expectations with cutting-edge technology and ideas without being bound by conventional ideas, practices and ways of doing things.”
