Hyundai is doubling down on physical artificial intelligence in partnerships with several leading technology firms.

The South Korean automaker, which teamed with U.S.-based company Nvidia last fall to build an AI factory using Nvidia technology, said it now plans to “become a physical AI solution company” and go well beyond automotive to “realization of integrated intelligence at the city level.”

The partnership aims to develop “intelligent spaces,” such as AI plants that optimize operations, all the way to urban infrastructure that’s “organically connected and operated through AI.”

Hyundai also announced ventures with robotaxi provider Waymo and with Boston Dynamics’ own partnership with Google DeepMind to “further advance AI capabilities.” Waymo and Google DeepMind are Alphabet subsidiaries.

“By combining Hyundai Motor Group’s manufacturing competitiveness, mobility and robotics technologies and extensive operational data with the AI infrastructure and algorithm capabilities of global technology leaders, the Group aims to help foster a new innovation ecosystem for the Physical AI era,” Hyundai said in a press release announcing the initiatives.

With Nvidia it plans a Robot Reference Platform combining the two companies’ AI toolboxes, in addition to a Robot Application Center and integration of Nvidia’s autonomous driving technologies with Hyundai vehicle platforms,in addition to developing AI talent.

Hyundai said it will extend its partnership with Waymo to develop an autonomous driving “ecosystem” and plans to make Ioniq 5 SUVs with “autonomous-ready modifications” at its Georgia plant.
