Carfax has been tracking used-car prices for two years, and now we’re expanding our coverage with regional breakdowns for our covered segments.
This is important because every region has a different mix of what’s popular, what’s available and what’s in short supply. The regional UCI will call out the biggest movers in each region while still tracking and commenting on the national pricing shifts. For example, in February, the average price of used Pickup Trucks was down $350 nationally, but up about $400 in the West region.
Here’s what’s going on in each of our eight regions this month:
Mid-Atlantic (PA, NJ, MD, DE): There was about a 4% jump in the average price of used vans and minivans in this area over February’s average price on Carfax.com. This seems to be part of a larger national trend for large family haulers.
Midwest (OH, IN, MI, IL, WI, MN, IA, MO): As these frigid states suffer their last month of winter, they’re also seeing the average price of used vans and minivans up roughly 4%. Pickup truck average prices are flat compared with last month but are down 7% from a year ago.
Northeast (NY, CT, VT, NH, ME, RI, MA): The average price of used luxury cars has dropped roughly $700 since February, or 2%, but vans and minivans are up about 3% here.
Plains (OK, ND, SD, NE, KS, ID, WY, MT): Out where the buffalo roam, shoppers are paying more for luxury SUVs. The average price for models in that popular segment is up 3% over last month, the biggest gainer in the region. Hybrids and electric vehicles also saw a bigger-than-usual bump of 2%, with the average topping $30,000.
South (GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, AR): Luxury SUV prices also climbed in this region, although not as much, rising just 2%. And the average price for nonluxury SUVs also went up nearly 2% to about $24,000.
Southeast (VA, WV, NC, SC, KY, TN): Vans and minivans saw the biggest increase in average used prices for this region on Carfax.com in March, rising about 4% and nearly hitting $22,000. The average price for used pickup trucks increased a whopping $800 over last month, but the average price is about $1,500 lower than a year earlier. Luxury SUV prices were also up here by 2% higher.
Southwest (UT, CO, AZ, NM, TX): This region stands out because the average price of used luxury cars saw the biggest increase here, up about 3%. But like many of the other regions, there were significant increases in the average price of used SUVs, luxury SUVs and vans and minivans.
West (WA, CA, OR, NV, HI, AK): Out here, where some consumers are fighting for choices in the wake of Southern California's wildfires, the average price of used vans and minivans and used SUVs are both higher since last month, up 3% and 2%, respectively.
