Hyundai is joining a growing list of automakers giving their customers access to Tesla’s public electric-vehicle charging network.

The South Korean company said it will give certain EV owners and lessees free NACS, or North American Charging System, adapters to use at more than 20,000 Tesla fast-charging points in the U.S.

It follows fellow automaker Kia in offering free adapters. General Motors is making NACS adapters available to its customers for $225 each, and they and many other automakers are switching to the NACS standard for their EV lineups.

Spotty public EV charging stations are a key reason many consumers have been reluctant to go electric.

“To accelerate EV adoption, we started by listening to our current owners,” said Olabisi Boyle, senior vice president, product planning and mobility strategy, of Hyundai Motor North America in a press release. “Our goal is to make the transition to electric seamless.”

Hyundai said its new EV models, including the Ioniq 9, will come equipped with NACS ports.

Meanwhile, current and new Hyundai EV consumers who buy or lease on or before Jan. 31, 2025 will be eligible to get a free adapter.

Models that apply are 2024 and earlier Kona Electric, Ioniq hatchback and Ioniq 5 and 6, and 2025 Ioniq 6, 5 N, and Kona Electric.

The automaker said it will release more details about the adapters early next year via its news web page and “additional customer-facing communication channels.”

It said its Genesis luxury line will also offer free adapters, with details to come in the new year.

Tesla developed the NACS charging system. The EV market leader also owns the most extensive public EV charging network in the U.S.
