The automotive lighting market is poised for robust growth over the next five years as more vehicles hit the road, a new report shows.

The GlobalData study focuses on the market based in the Asia-Pacific because it’s one of the world's biggest auto manufacturing regions. It estimates that automotive lighting production there will grow at a compound annual rate of more than 1% for the five years ending in 2028 from 104.1 million units to 109.6 million.

As the market grows, lighting technology is evolving. It’s been shifting from halogen headlights to LED technology due to LED’s greater output for increased visibility on the road as it consumes 50% less energy, making for greater fuel efficiency, GlobalData said. HD xenon lights are emerging as an alternative with similar attributes.

Meanwhile, sensors are being added to headlights in luxury models, including “follow me home” headlights that continue illuminating after the ignition is turned off to light occupants’ path as they move away from the vehicle.

“With the advent of autonomous vehicle technology, the market for connected front lighting technologies is expected to grow, further driving the advancement of front lighting technology,” said GlobalData Automotive Analyst Madhuchhanda Palit in a press release on the report.
