Car manufacturers are preparing to introduce seven-seater electric SUVs in months to come.

Auto executives believe larger plug-in SUVs, with three-row seating, will attract a new set of buyers to EV ownership. Electrics haven't been an option for many car shoppers, particularly parents who need larger vehicles with a third row of seating and more room for cargo.

The Kia EV9 and Volvo EX90 are expected to hit showrooms in coming months. Other car brands, such as Hyundai, Ford and Toyota, have confirmed plans to introduce larger electric SUVs soon.

According to J.D. Power, there was just one electric SUV with seven seats available in the U.S. for the 2022 and 2023 model years—the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which costs approximately $105,000. J.D. Power has categorized a few plug-in SUVs as midsize that also offer a third row, including the R1S by Rivian and the Model X by Tesla.

The company revealed that automakers have released 22 compact electric SUVs. Initial EV offerings targeted the most profitable vehicle segments: compact SUVs and pickup trucks.

Analysts suggest that seven-seat SUVs are a logical next step because of their popularity. Data shows that to be true. The Model Y, a midsize SUV with an optional third row, was one of the three best-selling EVs in the U.S. through June.
