Ford Motor Co. on Nov. 18 said it was reviving a $5-a-day lease offer on base versions of its Ford Mustang coupe, as Detroit automakers raise incentives in a year-end sales push, according to a Reuters report.
Ford offered the same deal earlier this year on its Mustang and Ford Ranger pickup to commemorate its 100th anniversary, pointing to company founder Henry Ford's decision to raise his factory workers' wages to $5 a day.
Ford, General Motors Corp. and the Chrysler group of DaimlerChrysler have tweaked their rebates, zero percent interest loans and other incentives over the past few weeks to boost year-end sales.
But, Reuters noted, none so far have raised incentives as quickly as they did in years past when GM went all-out in year-end efforts to grow its market share, forcing Ford and Chrysler to respond. GM executives have said that, although a third straight year of market share gains was unlikely in 2003, they were satisfied with their performance this year, Reuters said.
