Hybrids Abound in CR 2026 Top 10 Picks
Based on Consumer Reports’ new Safety Verdict score, Mazda makes the safest new cars on the road at a brand level, the highest percentage of its tested fleet earning the top score.

The Honda Civic hybrid adds a 2.0-liter four-cylinder powertrain that produces 200 hp - 50 hp more than the gas-only model.

Consumer Reports revealed its 2026 Top 10 picks for cars, trucks and SUVs, and this year hybrids reign supreme. While CR doesn’t discount the value of gas-only vehicles, every model listed is either a hybrid, available as one or is a purely electric vehicle.
“All 10 Top Picks have important things in common: they performed exceptionally well in our comprehensive road tests, they get high marks for safety, reliability, and owner satisfaction, and our team of experts would enthusiastically recommend them to their own friends and family,” says Alex Knizek, Consumer Reports' associate director of auto test development. “Whether you’re looking for the best small SUV, the best full-sized pickup, or something in between, there’s a great choice for you on this list.”
Here are the Top 10 new car picks:
Best Small Car: Honda Civic
Best Midsized Car: Toyota Camry
Best Subcompact SUV: Subaru Crosstrek
Best Compact SUV: Subaru Forester
Best Midsized SUV: Toyota Grand Highlander
Best Luxury Compact SUV: Lexus NX
Best Luxury Midsized SUV: BMW X5
Best Small Pickup Truck: Ford Maverick
Best Full-Sized Pickup Truck: Ford F-150
Best Electric Vehicle: Tesla Model Y
CR’s new Safety Verdict rating system incorporates its evaluations for handling and ease of use, crash test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and whether proven safety technologies are available as standard equipment. This year Mazda was ranked as making the safest new cars on the road based on a brand-level analysis.
