Mercedes-Benz's first high-power charging stations will open this fall as part of the automaker's plan to expand its global EV infrastructure.
"We firmly believe electric mobility is the key to a sustainable, zero-emission future,” says Franz Reiner, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG. “Our goal is to create an infrastructure that offers electric vehicles reliable and easy charging options. In this way, we are actively supporting the transformation to electric mobility.”
In October, the first Mercedes "Charging Hubs" will start functioning in:
Atlanta,
Chengdu, China
Mannheim, Germany
Mercedes intends to increase its global charging network to over 2,000 high-power charging points by the end of 2024. The automaker intends plans to create over 2,000 charging hubs with over 10,000 charging points by 2030.
It says the network establishes fast, convenient and environmentally-friendly EV charging standards. The stations offer a charging rate of up to 400 kilowatst, depending on the region, using standard charging systems like CCS1, CCS2, NACS, and GB/T. Intelligent charging management allows the station to charge each vehicle to its maximum power rating.
Mercedes said it prioritized customer safety and comfort when choosing charging hub locations, placing them in high-traffic areas and Mercedes dealerships.
The brand also plans to equip stations with surveillance cameras. Some locations have smart light poles to light the area and functional LED elements that display the charging point's availability and the vehicle's charging status. Mercedes also installed canaopies at select charging hubs for protection from the elements.
Mercedes intends to offer its charging network to drivers of all EV brands. However, only Mercedes-Benz customers can reserve a charging point via the Mercedes-Benz me Charge service to reduce waiting times. The route-planning feature of Mercedes' Navigation with Electric Intelligence will incorporate stations to help drivers plan their next charge. Plug & Charge also will be offered at the stations to automate the charging and payment process for Mercedes customers.
"With the Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging Network, we are expanding global charging options and setting new standards in electric vehicle charging,” Reiner adds. “We want to encourage our customers to switch to zero-emission vehicles and thus contribute positively to protecting our environment."
