Volkswagen introduced the first VW bus model it’s launched in North America in 20 years.

The battery-powered ID.Buzz, with its long wheelbase, is one of “the most spacious electric vehicles,” VW says in a press release announcing the launch. The rear-wheel drive model seats up to seven people.

Volkswagen said in March that it’s focusing new energy on building the North American market, which it sees as a key growth market for battery-electric vehicles. It said it plans to introduce more than 25 BEV models in the U.S. through 2030, with the goal of establishing the “broadest portfolio of full-electric vehicles” here.

VW last sold a bus model in the T4 generation 20 years ago. Deliveries of the new model are scheduled to start next year.

The German automaker is banking on America's long relationship with the bus line, forever associated with the 1960s counterculture in the U.S., to drive sales here.

“The VW bus has a long history in the USA and enjoys real cult status. Our aim today is to further strengthen the Volkswagen brand in America,” said Volkswagen Group of America President and CEO Pablo Di Si.

The ID.Buzz will have an 85 kilowatt hour battery for greater range between charges.
