Ford has announced a plug-in hybrid version of its Ranger pickup truck, which will combine electric driving capabilities with the dependable and versatile features that European customers expect, the automaker announced in a press release.

Ranger Plug-in Hybrid production will begin in late 2024, with customer deliveries starting in early 2025, the automaker announced.

However, the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will only be available in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, a Ford spokesperson told The Drive. "For customers in North America looking for a hybrid or electric truck, we currently offer Maverick Hybrid, F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid, and F-150 Lightning."

However, none of the U.S. options are plug-in hybrids. The Drive reported.

The new Ranger Plug-in Hybrid stands out among Ford's electric pickups, thanks to a 28-mile electric range and its ability to also run on gasoline.

The Ford Pro ecosystem will aid Ranger Plug-in Hybrid customers with charging, software and service options for a smooth transition to electric vehicles, according to the press release.

“The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will help customers step forward into an electrified future, with more confidence and capability than ever before, while keeping Ranger at the forefront of innovation and leadership in the mid-size pickup truck segment,” said Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro, Europe.

According to the release, the Ranger Plug-in Hybrid will deliver more torque than any other Ranger by combining a 2.3-liter Ford EcoBoost petrol engine with an electric motor and rechargeable battery system. Its pure electric drive capability opens new possibilities for business owners in growing numbers of towns and cities with low emissions zones, the release noted.

The maximum braked towing capacity of the Ranger Plug-In Hybrid is a targeted 3,500 kg (7716 lbs.) – the same as the rest of the Ranger line-up, the release reported.

The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid also will have Pro Power Onboard, allowing users to power their tools and appliances through embedded outlets in the cargo bed and cabin. Besides on-demand electricity, Ranger Plug-in Hybrid's EV drive modes provide customers with more flexibility in deciding how and when to use EV battery power, according to the release.

The Ranger Plug-In Hybrid also features the proven four-wheel drive off-road capability Rangers are known for, according to the release.

“Our customers want electrified vehicles that deliver strong performance and affordable cost of ownership without compromising what they love about their truck,” Schep said. “The Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is a best-of-both-worlds solution for work, play, and family—offering customers zero-tailpipe emission EV driving for short trips, or hybrid performance that delivers incredible off-road, payload and towing capabilities. And, with Pro Power Onboard for the first time, Ranger owners can power their work sites and campsites easily.”
