Apple, Google to Integrate Smartphones with Vehicles
With the 2016 model year, Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto will make smartphone integration available with the touch of a steering wheel button.
LOS ANGELES — This fall, software from both Apple and Google will be available to integrate smartphones with the dashboards of 2016 model year vehicles. Apple’s CarPlay and Google’s Android Auto allow voice commands to be triggered with the touch of steering wheel button when a smartphone is plugged into the vehicle’s USB port, The Detroit Free Press reports.
IHS told the news source it expects automakers in the U.S. and Canada to sell 497,000 cars with CarPlay, Android Auto or both this year. The number should jump to 5 million in 2018 and nearly 10 million in 2020. General Motors is currently the only manufacturer to offer these features as standard on its most inexpensive models, like the Chevrolet Spark.
