Automotive recalls fell about 13% year-over-year in 2022 to 955, according to Sedgwick, based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The data provider also noted a drop of 6% from the third quarter to the fourth.
Despite the quarter-over-quarter decrease, the number of effected units rose about 44% to 7.5 million in the fourth quarter. Year-over-year, though, effected units were at a nine-year low, or 3.6 million fewer units than in 2021 for a total of 31.2 million.
Sedgwick reported that equipment issues continued to be the most common problem leading to recalls last year, or 21% of recalls, plus the leading cause in the fourth quarter and for eight quarters running.
But in terms of effected units, equipment accounted for just 2% of the year’s total.
In the fourth quarter, exterior lighting led the cause categories for number of effected units, impacting 1.6 million units across eight recalls.
