General Motors Corp. plans to offer $500 in additional rebates on full-size pickup trucks, its most profitable vehicles, to try and stave
off competition from Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co., said dealers familiar with the company's plans, according to Bloomberg News.
The world's largest automaker will increase to $2,500 the discounts it extends on its Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche and GMC Sierra pickups, according to the dealers, Bloomberg News said.
GM spokesman Jeff Roegner declined to comment.
Bloomberg News said GM Chief Executive Officer Richard Wagoner is promoting the company's biggest trucks as Ford unveils a redesigned F-150 pickup and Nissan adds its first full-size truck this year.
GM was the first to offer no-interest loans to stimulate demand after the Sept. 11 attacks. Along with cost cuts, the incentives helped
the company quadruple fourth-quarter profit.
