U.S. automotive recalls fell in the second quarter, marking the second lowest quarterly volume of affected units in a decade.
Five million units were recalled, down 60% quarter-over-quarter, and the number of recall events fell 7% to 243, according to Sedgwick data.
Still, the number of affected units was up 10% year-over-year in the first six months of 2024, the only first-half increase since 2020.
Equipment led the categories of problem areas requiring recalls, with 42 events, or 17%, surpassing electrical systems, which had led causes for a year as electric-vehicle sales increased.
By volume, back-over prevention systems led reasons for recalls, affecting 1.7 million units over a dozen events, including one recall that affected more than a million units.
